Geelong wind farm

A new wind turbine manufacturing hub in Geelong is set to boost the local economy with 27 new jobs for locals and training in wind turbine maintenance for hundreds of more people.

The new Vestas Renewable Energy Hub has been set up to build wind turbines for the 180 megawatt Berrybank Wind Farm and the 336 megawatt Dundonnell Wind Farm.

The announcement is part of the Andrews Labor Government’s Victorian Renewable Energy Targets reverse auction program. The VRET program calls for formal bids from renewable energy projects to support the government’s targets for 25 per cent of electricity generated by renewables by 2020, and 40 per cent by 2025.

As well as training up staff in wind turbine manufacturing and management, 100 turbine hubs and 50 drive trains for the Dundonnell and Berrybank projects will be assembled on the site at Corio Quay South.

“This hub will bring more local jobs to Geelong in an industry that is only going to get bigger,” member for Geelong Christine Couzens said.

69 wind and solar plants are under construction in Australia right now, creating almost 10,000 jobs in the renewable energy industry, according to a renewables score card released by the Climate Council on Tuesday.

The report also put Victoria ahead of NSW, the Northern Territory and Western Australia on overall renewables performance. The scoring was based on state’s percentage of renewable electricity, the proportion of households with solar, and policies that support renewable energy.
