Professor Elizabeth Mossop

Urbanist and landscape architect Elizabeth Mossop has been appointed dean of the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building at the University of Technology Sydney.

Professor Mossop is founding principal at Spackman Mossop + Michaels, and has enjoyed a 25-year academic career at universities in the US and Australia.

UTS vice-chancellor Professor Attila Brungs said Professor Mossop had a record of visionary leadership.

“We were deeply impressed by her commitment to excellence as well as cross-disciplinary research and teaching, collaborating with engineering, technology, health and other disciplines,” Professor Brungs said.

“Her teaching and research in urban landscape design and multi-functional infrastructure have a strong sustainability focus. This focus will strengthen UTS’s significant capacity in this area.”

Professor Mossop was most recently professor of landscape architecture and director of the Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture at Louisiana State University. Before that she was director of the Masters of Landscape Architecture program at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Professor Mossop said she was honoured by her appointment and looked forward to building on the strong foundations set by predecessor Professor Desley Luscombe.

“I am passionate about the power of design and its role in society and looking forward to the opportunity to work in a city with a strong design culture and sophisticated environmental values,” she said.

“I am looking forward to working with the faculty’s excellent academic staff in highlighting the faculty’s role in the city, and in new collaborations with industry and the professions.”

Professor Mossop will take up her new post in mid-2016.
