Brief – 30 April 2010 – South Australia has appointed architect and educator Professor Laura Lee as South Australia’s first Commissioner for Integrated Design, in a move applauded by architects as a sign of leadership in sustainability.

Australian Institute of Architects’ SA President Timothy Horton said the appointment demonstrated the State Government valued design as the foundation for integrated decision making and promoting innovation.

“The Institute has deep respect for Professor Lee’s understanding of the place for architecture in shaping more livable, sustainable cities, and her emphasis on open collaboration in the design of our cities reflects a global recognition that multi-disciplinary solutions are inherently better solutions,” Mr Horton said.

Professor Lee was the 2009 Thinker-in-Residence during which time she “modelled a unique and timely understanding of the need for a new approach to the process of design, planning and development,” Mr Horton said.
