30 April 2010 โ€“ A new grass roots campaign for 100 per cent renewable energy will be launched on Sunday with groups from more than 70 communities across the country calling on Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to make an election commitment to introduce a new national clean energy bonus.

Spokesperson for the campaign Lindsay Soutar said people wanted a โ€œclean energy response to the climate crisis.โ€

Ms Soutar said that Australia, โ€œwith its sun, ocean and wind, could be a clean energy leader, creating thousands of jobs along the way โ€“ but right now we are at risk of being left behind the rest of the world.

โ€œWe know the community supports a shift to clean energy so we are launching this new campaign to mobilise public concern in the lead up to the federal election.โ€

โ€œWe want an election commitment from the Federal government for a new clean energy bonus that would ensure a guaranteed price for renewable energy. This would drive investment in emerging technologies like large scale solar thermal power plants, geothermal and wave energy.

โ€œThis is a first step in what will be a growing campaign for a shift to 100 per cent renewable energy built from the ground up.

โ€œThe 100% renewable campaign will engage in grass roots organising like door knocking and letter boxing to grow public action for clean energy.โ€
