City of Melbourne chief executive officer Justin Hanney

City of Melbourne has a new chief executive officer, Justin Hanney, who hails from a strong public service background, most recently the Employment, Investment and Trade Group at the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources where he was lead deputy secretary.

His background includes significant experience in attracting and facilitating international and domestic investment, grow employment and expand Victoria’s offshore trade, the City of Melbourne said in a media statement.

This includes roles as chief executive officer of Regional Development Victoria, the City of Yarra and other councils. He started his career as a youth worker in Collingwood and has also worked with some of the largest firms in the state.

Lord Mayor Sally Capp said Mr Hanney was chosen from a field of 140 candidates.

He replaces outgoing chief executive officer Ben Rimmer.
