11 April 2013 — Travel review site TripAdvisor has launched its first green rating system for sustainable hotels and B&Bs in the United States.
The program incorporates a two-tiered assessment of sustainable practices. To receive base level accreditation as a GreenPartner, properties must first meet a minimum of seven green practices.
These practices include energy-efficient light bulbs, towel and linen re-use and recycling at least two types of waste. They also extend to social responsibility by including staff training and guest education criteria to promote environmentally friendly behaviour.
The Green Leader status is offered to premises that complete a comprehensive survey of 90 questions on energy, water, waste and purchasing practices, as well as innovation and education initiatives.
The program has been developed with the US Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program, the United Nations Environment Program and the US Green Building Council, along with other industry experts.
