BRIEF – 5 August 2009 – VicUrban’s Officer township in Melbourne’s south-east, Frasers Broadway, Macquarie University and Barangaroo in Sydney, CUB in Melbourne, and Eastlake in the ACT could all soon be able to rate the sustainability of their entire communities and precincts, with the development of a new framework to be developed by the Green Building Council of Australia and the Victorian Government’s urban development agency, VicUrban.

The GBCA and VicUrban held a visioning workshop in June with 48 representatives from Australia’s development and building industry and the three tiers of government to outline what a framework could look like, a joint media statement from the two groups said.

Chief executive of the GBCA, Romilly Madew, said there was an increasing demand from industry for a benchmarking framework for sustainable communities.

Chief Executive Officer of VicUrban, Pru Sanderson, said that the agency was committed to developing a comprehensive approach to urban sustainability.
