The City of Sydney’s cycleway network has claimed the People’s Choice prize at the 2016 Green Cities Conference.

The “Weapons of Mass Creation” competition rewards the most sustainable and innovative ideas in leading cities.

The city’s “Bus to Bike: using the Sydney Cycleways network to create capacity on Sydney’s public transport” entry was voted People’s Choice by 600 built-environment professionals attending the conference.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the city is committed to creating a safe network of cycleways through central Sydney, as well as supporting local business and easing pressure on already congested roads.

“For Sydney to keep its status as a world class city, we need to continually rethink the way we do things. Getting people on their bikes takes pressure off public transport and creates more space on the roads for those who need to drive,” she said.

“The city is committed to working toward citywide sustainable transport solutions that challenge assumptions about the best way to get from A to B.

“This award is a testament to the city’s hard work in promoting active transport in Sydney.”
