31 March 2011 – Award winning architect Michael Heenan will be a judge for the 2011 world
architecture festival awards in Barcelona in November – the second year running he has been selected.
Mr Heenan was the winning architect for the best sports building at the 2009 festival, the sports centre in the NSW town of Berry.
The $1 million redesign of the centre beat the redevelopment of Wimbledon and the New York Jets training complex to take out the prize. The hall features cement walls pierced with hundreds of shards of glass that let the natural light in during the day and at night let the light inside sparkle like stars.
According to a media statement Mr Heenan has also won two consecutive Blacket prizes for excellence in architecture from the Australian Institute of Architects and was chair of the NSW AIA Architecture Awards jury in 2010.
He is principal architect for Allen Jack+Cottier.
