BRIEF: A new training program aims to improve subconstractors’ sustainability expertise.
The nationally-accredited training will cover topics such as choosing and recommending sustainable materials, cutting resource use and recycling.
The Green Tradies program is run by the Green Building Institute and is designed for carpenters, plasterers, floor sanders, tilers, bricklayers, carpet layers and any other tradesperson wanting to work on projects that comply with Green Star or HIA GreenSmart guidelines.
The course material is focused on practical green building processes, including how to conduct an on-site sustainability audit, and also greening the individual trade business, such as developing a sustainability action plan. It also explains key green building principles such as embodied energy in materials. The course content is streamed direct to laptop, smartphone, tablet or PC with 24 hour availability.
Green Building Institute trainer Daniel Wurm said the course was designed to help tradies green their supply chain and market themselves in the fastest growing sector of the building industry.
Mr Wurm said the course used real-life case studies of Australia’s greenest tradies to demonstrate practical ways to implement sustainability.
