Witchcliffe Ecovillage, nestled in the picturesque landscape of the Margaret River region in Western Australia opens its doors for Sustainable House Day on 21 April.

With it will come two major awards that will place this ambitious project on the map for aspiring sustainability developers.

Last year the project won the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects awards in the “infrastructure” and “garden” categories.

The second announcement, this week, was from the Urban Development Institute of Australia which recognised the development with a win in both the “sustainability” category and as “project of the year”.

The UDIA said the development focused on sustainability and environmental stewardship and stood out “as a shining example of responsible development”.

Project co-founders and partners Mike Hulme and Michelle Sheridan previously told The Fifth Estate that the project was created to be “the most sustainable residential community possible”.

If you’ve got a curious mind and an eye for all things sustainable you can use this yearly opportunity to explore the village and check out other houses open for inspection.

As well as a casual strolls through, visitors will also be able to take part in guided tours and listen to discussions by experts to reveal innovations and answer queries.

See the website for all details.

The development integrates self-sufficiency in renewable energy and water with extensive community gardens and regenerative agriculture practices in its design.

UDIA said that the Ecovillage was committed to preserving and enhancing the natural environment, showcasing its efforts to protect biodiversity and minimise ecological footprint.

“At the Witchcliffe Ecovillage, sustainability is not just a buzzword but a way of life, ingrained in every aspect of the community’s ethos. From passive solar design and waste reduction initiatives to organic farming, the Ecovillage embodies a vision of a resilient, flourishing future for both its residents and the planet,” the institute stated.

Witchcliffe Ecovillage “was recognised for being one of the most sustainable urban developments in the world.”
