Built environment and sustainability advocates were among 895 people recognised for their contributions to the country at this year’s Australia Day honours.
A few familiar faces to The Fifth Estate’s pages are featured in the list, including former Clean Energy Regulator chair Chloe Munro, Grattan Institute energy program director Tony Wood and former Arup head and current Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia chair David Singleton.
Ms Munro was awarded an Officer (AO) in the General Division for her “distinguished service to public administration through leadership roles in the area of renewable energy, water and climate change process and reform, and to the performing arts”.
She is currently independent chair of the Australian Energy Market Operator expert panel.
Mr Wood received a Member (AM) in the General Division for “significant service to conservation and the environment, particularly in the areas of energy policy, climate change, and sustainability”.
Mr Singleton was awarded an AM for his “significant service to engineering, particularly through creating sustainable infrastructure for cities and communities”.
The honour was welcomed by Standards Australia, where Mr Singleton currently chairs the Standards Development and Accreditation Committee.
“I am delighted that David’s contribution to developing sustainable infrastructure and the engineering sector as a whole has been recognised,” Standards Australia chief executive Dr Bronwyn Evans said.
Meg Lees, the former Democrat Leader, was given an AO for “distinguished service to the Parliament of Australia and the people of South Australia, particularly through leading contributions to environmental legislation and the reformation of the taxation system”.
Ms Lees is responsible for helping passing legislation that provided $1 billion for environmental initiatives in 2000, and helped to strengthen federal environment and biodiversity legislation.
