Winners of the 2019 AHI Professional Excellence in Housing Awards in Queensland

BRIEF: Australasian Housing Institution has announced the winners of its Professional Excellence in Housing Award for the state of Queensland.

The award recognises excellence in social housing, showcasing companies and individuals they judge as having made “a significant and lasting difference: to tenants or service users, to their community, to their colleagues and to their profession”.

This year’s winners included Churches of Christ Housing Services for their DigiAsk program, which took out the Leading Community Engagement Practice Award. The program provides people who are homeless or in social housing with access to digital resources such as wifi, charging stations and printers, as well as helping improve digital literacy, all from a mobile van.

Coast2Bay Housing took out the Leading Innovation Award for their Better Together project, a shared housing community for single women over the age of 55 who would otherwise be living alone. The Queensland government supported project names companionship, affordability and peace of mind as the three benefits for people sharing homes.

The Outstanding Achievement Award was given to Horizon Housing senior executive Jamie Muchall who has for the last ten years been lobbying for funds and policy changes to benefit vulnerable members of society.

Awards for the remaining states and territories will be announced over the following months, with the winners of each going into a pool from which national winners will be selected. The Australasian Award Winners will be announced at the Awards Gala Dinner on the 27th of August 2019 in Darwin during the National Housing Conference.
