5 June 2013 — Teachers Mutual Bank has taken out the Best Bank in Socially Responsible Performance category in the Australian Banking and Finance Award.

Chief executive officer Steve James said as a mutual bank “we continue to punch above our weight on sustainability because our business believes that profit has a purpose”.

The 23rd annual Australian Banking and Finance Awards were held in Sydney on May 30.

Entrants in the socially responsible performance category had to demonstrate:

  • environmental protection
  • respect for human rights
  • the continuing improvement of working employment and relations conditions
  • social commitment
  • responsibility attitudes with suppliers and customers
  • transparency and effectiveness of corporate governance
