31 October 2012 — Lend Lease’s Simon Basheer is the new president of the Urban Development Institute of Australia NSW. Mr Basheer, who is general manager, NSW/ACT, Lend Lease Communities, was elected to the position after Michael Corcoran stepped down after serving for two years. Mr Basheer said it was a crucial time of progress for the development industry in NSW, with planning and strata law reform and major infrastructure planning under way. “After an incredibly tough decade for development in NSW, we’re standing at the threshold of a promising new era, if we can get the system right,’’ said Mr Basheer. “It really is time to seize the moment and the industry must work with government to secure a system that encourages serious private investment in development in NSW, rather than a system that deters it. “My focus will be on creating confidence for investment in Sydney and NSW. That will encompass urban renewal and greenfield development across the residential, commercial, retail and industrial sectors. “There needs to be more new jobs and quality infrastructure to support development. We want greater investment in more big-ticket projects that will help elevate Sydney as a world-class city.’’ Mr Basheer has more than 25 years’ experience in the Australian development industry. He joined Lend Lease in 1995 and has been involved in the marketing and management of a many of Lend Lease’s largest masterplanned community projects. He has been an active member of the UDIA in Queensland and NSW for more than 14 years. He is a UDIA NSW councillor and sits on the UDIA National Council.
