29 July 2009 – BRIEF – BHP Billiton’s expansion of the Olympic Dam copper and uranium mine in South Australia would mean a 12 per cent blowout in the state’s greenhouse emissions, according to the Australian Conservation Foundation revealed today.

“This BHP mining plan is equivalent to putting more than one million inefficient polluting cars on to the roads and keeping them there for decades to come,” said ACF Climate Change Program Manager Tony Mohr.

BHP was seeking government approval to increase Olympic Dam’s greenhouse emissions by at least 4.1 million tonnes a year – a 12.4 per cent increase in SA’s total greenhouse emissionsm Mr Mohr said.
