8 October 2013 — A Canadian solar expert has said Australia’s use of solar for heating and cooling is virtually non-existent, and called on the country to embrace solar air technology.
Wes Johnston, vice president of the Canadian Solar Industries Association, said that solar air technology could be a significant player in heating and cooling both commercial and residential buildings, and could play a large role in reducing overall energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions.
Speaking ahead of his address to All-Energy Australia 2013 conference this Thursday, Mr Johnston said Australia should broaden its focus away from solar photovoltaics and enjoy the benefits of solar heating and cooling.
“Clearly Australia is a sun-kissed nation and the benefits of solar air technology are unassailable,” Mr Johnston said.
“While my role isn’t to convert Aussies, it most certainly is to inform them, and I intend to present compelling reasons why solar PV used in conjunction with solar air is a better mix that solar PV alone.”
