9 April 2014 — The LEED certification tool has reached three billion square feet (280 million square metres) of certified space globally, the US Green Building Council has announced.
“This milestone is the result of leaders across our industry making the business and environmental case for healthy, sustainable buildings,” said president, chief executive and founding chair of the USGBC Rick Fedrizzi.
A recent report by McGraw-Hill estimated that green construction would comprise half of all US construction and be worth $248 billion by 2016.
The USGBC says LEED is currently the most utilised green building program globally, with more than 150,000 sq m of commercial building space being certified each day.
