The Green Building Council of Australia has formed partnerships with the Green Building Information Gateway and Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark to progress Australia’s green building industry.

The GBCA said its partnership with the US-based GBIG, an online platform featuring data and case studies on green building projects around the world, would showcase Australia’s green building capabilities to global investors and decision-makers.

“In the era of ‘big data’, building owners and managers have more information at their fingertips than ever before,” GBCA chief executive Romilly Madew said. “GBIG brings all that information together in one database, and now includes Green Star-certified projects. This will make it easier for international investors to gain data, analysis and insights about high-performing green buildings in Australia.”

She said the partnership would “enable GBCA members to showcase their contributions to Green Star-rated buildings and to outline their green building credentials to a global audience”.

The GBCA said its other partnership – with GRESB – would advance reporting on environmental, social and economic performance in Australia’s real estate sector.

“Increasingly, investors are demanding reliable data on energy efficiency and sustainability to help guide their decision-making,” Ms Madew said. “The Green Building Council of Australia is determined to play a role in the global discussion around benchmarking on behalf of its members, and to ensure Australia maintains its position as a global leader in sustainability.”

GRESB assesses the environmental, social and governance performance of property funds around the world. In 2014, GRESB covered 637 funds representing $2.1 trillion in property value.

The move follows a partnership between GRESB and the UK Building Research Establishment, responsible for the BREEAM building rating tool.
