The Sustainable Temporary Adaptive Reuse or STAR project by University of Technology of Sydneyโ€™s researchers Dr Gill Armstrong and Professor Sara Wilkinson is spreading its influence.

New members include Washington State University and Sydney based Valentino Gareri Atelier architects will join the program.

The program aims to find alternative uses for underutilised commercial spaces by matching owners with occupants that might be from a range of industries and backgrounds in a kind of temporary mutually beneficial framework.

The Urban Development Institute of Australia NSW Urban Renewal, BTR, TOD, and Local Town Centres Committee have appointed Fender Katsalidis partner, Rob Mirams, as one of its members. The committeeโ€™s goals are to improve development in existing parts of the city, including urban renewal and regeneration, apartments, mixed-use and housing diversity.

Miramsโ€™ projects include Central Station Precinct masterplan in Sydney, George Place in central Sydney, and the Garangula Gallery in rural NSW.

TAFE NSW has appointed Emma Bombonato as its senior manager of sustainability. The appointment follows Bombonatoโ€™s seven years tenure as the environmental sustainability manager at the Sydney Opera House.  

Bombonato said her work at the venue included projects on six green stars, advancing culture for climate action and seahorses. She will work on the TAFE NSW Sustainability Strategy 2030 in her new role.

The Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle has appointed Mark Squires as its sustainability manager. Squires has previously been a partner leader for Race for 2030. He had also been a senior team leader at the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment and served in a number of government roles before that.

Squire said heโ€™ll be helping the diocese deliver its โ€œbold sustainability planโ€ across its diverse regional assets.

SmartCrete CRC has appointed Dr Ross Harper as its non-executive director on its board. Harper was previously the group president operations of Boral Ltd and had worked within the Australiaโ€™s concrete ecosystem.
