NEWS IN BRIEF: The Victorian government released its circular economy strategy this week, which included a new purple bin for glass waste because it’s a big contaminant in recycling streams.
There’s also a container deposit scheme and plans to invest $100 million in research that will help expand the local processing and manufacturing industry and create more products.
The government will fund the $129 million rollout of new bins through the state’s Sustainability Fund as local councils’ kerbside recycling contracts come to an end.
The plan will create 3900 jobs.

TFE Hotels and Hume Partners Property are building what they claim is Australia’s first cross-laminated timber hotel in Melbourne. Designed by Bates Smart, the 220-room Adina Apartment Hotel Melbourne Southbank is due to open later this year.
Around 5300 tonnes of CLT was used in the construction of the hotel, offsetting around 4200 tonnes of C02 from the atmosphere.
AMP Capital’s Quay Quarter Tower at Circular Quay has achieved a 6 Star Green Star – Office Design v3 rating from the Green Building Council of Australia.
The building has a range of sustainability features but most notably, around two-thirds of the building’s original core has been retained through the construction process, resulting in a carbon saving of 6.1 million kilograms.
