October has been a busy month and its clearly full steam ahead for our readers when it comes to retrofitting and building resilience, now that the Bureau of Meteorology announced that El Niño is underway. That’s what we can infer anyway from the most popular stories you clicked on during October.
You’ll notice a lot of them are from a while back. From guides on protecting home and getting to net zero to reports on how to make Sydney more resilient and insurers withdrawing from home insurance market.
Among the gems from the vault are:
Neil Savery says that Australia lags the rest of the world in energy efficiency. It needs to stop inching forward to net zero and get serious about resilience as we head to severe climate events. Savery, who probably knows the industry dynamics better than most, says Australia is in its infancy when it comes to building energy efficient homes.
If you have similar views – about why we need a crack on with our net zero and resilience transition, you know what to do. Send your tips to Editorial@thefifthestate.com.au.
There are some job appointments that are “different, unusual” and JLL’s hire of Dr Georgia Warren-Myers as head of ESG value and risk Advisory for Asia Pacific is one. First, she’s got a PhD and then she’s an academic. Her previous role was Associate Professor in Property at The University of Melbourne. We predict a lot more PhDs in real estate consultancy if their skills help shed light for investors on the impact of climate change and sustainability on property, as Warren-Myers’ does.
On top of the list is the Festival of Electric Ideas Masterclass Special Report, which from after this week will be available only to our members.
We are now looking for new presenters and sponsors for several of our upcoming masterclasses, which (a bit eerily) is called Masterclasses for ESG & the New World.
You can become a member of The Fifth Estate and support us in making this planet our business for as little as $120 a year (or more for those who love what we do). And this is a price that may soon need to rise…just sayin’…
Also get in touch if you feel you are one of “the best in the business” and happy to contribute a deep dive presentation on one of the issues we’ve flagged (editorial@thefifthestate.com.au) or if you want your name in lights as sponsor of one, several or all of the masterclasses (abdul@thefifthestate.com.au)
October is also the month of reports as a bevy of them hits the headline, confirming that there is indeed a skills shortage and that the biggest opportunities are in the clean energy mega trend area. But other shortages include in planning, ESG (of course) and even in homelessness services. One report being the Towards a National Jobs and Skills Roadmap.
Also popular is TFE’s visit to Building 4.0 CRC’s conference on the collision of ideas we need to have for buildings and construction (TFE travelled to the conference as a guest of the CRC) making the top 15 along with partnered content piece from Cerclos on how life cycle carbon assessment is much easier than you might think.
