Over sixty #StopAdani protesters are blocking the doors to Commonwealth Bank’s Head Office at 201 Sussex St, protesting the bank’s refusal to rule out funding the Adani coal mine. The protesters have refused to leave and are playing games, including UNO, Trivia, and Bingo.
“We are playing games at CommBank’s head office to represent the bank playing games with our future by not ruling out funding Adani’s coal mine.” Said Byron Smith, a protester currently inside the building.
“By considering Adani’s disastrous coal mine while climate change is already affecting us, CommBank are playing games with our future.” concluded Byron Smith.
A #StopAdani spokesperson, Rada Germanos, commented: “The bank has told us they only consider projects that meet their “strict” environmental, social and governance standards. Yet those same standards have allowed them to hand over $1 billion dollars to Adani for coal projects in Australia just in the last five years.”
“CommBank’s supposedly “strict” environmental standards have allowed them to become the biggest funder of fossil fuel projects in Australia. It’s farcical and unacceptable. CommBank must stop funding new coal projects and rule out Adani for good.” continued Rada Germanos.
“It is unacceptable for them to be silent on this issue. This mine will fast track climate change beyond belief – leading to further destruction of our biodiversity, including the death of the Great Barrier Reef.”
