The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), the peak professional body for building services engineers, has appointed Sharon Pestonji as business development manager in the Australia New Zealand region.

This is CIBSE’s first full-time appointment in the ANZ region in its 30-year history.

Ms Pestonji has spent the past 12 years in Europe and was formerly marketing executive for CIBSE in London.

A CIBSE release said she would be charged with “shaking up the membership mix, attracting more students and in particular more women to the industry”. Engineering institutions are known for being dominated by men, in particular aging men, so broadening the membership base is crucial for organisations like CIBSE.

“Building services engineering is great profession, and with the environmental challenges that society now faces, I am really excited to be playing a part in encouraging the next generation to step up,” Ms Pestonji said.

  1. As one of the aging, men I think this is a fantastic initiative. Institutions like CIBSE are needed now more than ever, and the more they can do to drive, support and empower a new generation of critical thinkers and problem solvers, the better chance we have of delivering a better future. So good luck Sharon. I dont think it will be easy, but it will certainly be worthwhile.
