Here’s the hot goss’ in jobs and biz news you’ve been waiting for.

Among the audience at the Sydney Summit on Monday morning (more to come) was Kathy Jones, newly emerged from her former, recently-sold company Kathy Jones & Associates to launch a new company, Stonehaven. The new business will also work in the property and development sector offering advice and a range of consulting services to help clients navigate the “major transitions across energy, climate, and globalism, navigating the political economy.”

Jones is executive chair of the new outfit and general manager is Marc Snape.

“Our approach is grounded in our unique understanding of people’s behaviours and motivations” says the company’s compelling marketing document, offering to work through understanding of community behaviours and values.

Biz deals

Australian and New Zealand based smart metering and data intelligence provider Intellihub this week announced it had secured a 10 year IoT deal and became the key supplier of smart metering services to Telstra Energy customers.

“The high speed Intelli-M smart meter and Intelli-ConX communications bridge will be deployed under the contract, capable of providing sub second, high speed measurements for additional solar control and VPP style services.” Intellihub said in a media statement.

“More than four million connected devices can be accommodated under the agreement, supporting Intellihub’s growing smart metering deployments on behalf of more than 40 electricity retail customers.”

Meanwhile, Australian energy retailer Nectr has announced an expansion to offer clean energy in the ACT.

“Canberra’s leadership as the first city in the Southern Hemisphere to purchase its energy from 100 per cent renewable sources is progressive and forward-thinking. That’s how we see Nectr’s role in supporting the energy industry’s transition to net zero,” said Andrew Butler, Nectr managing director.

The company offers Climate Active certification and GreenPower accreditation means it one of “a select few Australian retailers to offer both 100 per cent carbon neutral and 100 per cent GreenPower plans,” the company claims.

According to consumer research from IBM, 57 per cent of Australian consumers are willing to change their purchasing habits to reduce their impact on the environment.

“Our customers want to know that the businesses they support can help them to reduce their impact on the environment… Nectr believes that every household should have access to affordable energy that suits their consumption habits.”

And about that… the sale of Powershop, which markets itself as a clean energy provider, to oil giant Shell – has led to the shedding of 6000 customers already – and that’s before those of us who haven’t got around to jumping ship.

The company flopped in the latest Greenpeace’s Green Electricity Guide – falling from first place to 10th.

Not that Shell will care much. It can probably see there’s good business to be had in the green space while it keeps its other tentacles chin-deep in dirty fossil fuels, while they can still extract a buck.

But the signal from annoyed green power customers ought to resonate across the consumer-sphere.

“It’s really clear consumers care increasingly about where electricity comes from,” Greenpeace Australia Pacific senior campaigner Glenn Walker told The Fifth Estate.

“Consumers are looking for clean and green energy. A third of carbon emissions come from the dirty energy grid. Consumers have the power to change that.”

Stacey Johnson has moved into a regional sustainability management role in building and development in NSW and the ACT at Lendlease.

She was previously a project manager at the company, and before that, a design manager.

A week ago Australian corporate and financial communications consultancy Cannings Strategic Communications announced that Kylie FitzGerald was joining as a senior adviser part time to provide communications advice and support to their clients.

Previously, Ms FitzGerald worked for 24 years at Australian construction materials and building products supplier Boral Australia. She was director of investor relations and communications, leading a team responsible for investor relations, issues management, transaction communications and sustainability reporting.

Bank Australia announced Dr Sasha Courville will join its executive team as chief impact officer. With nine years at NAB and a background in sustainability, social impact and environmental management Dr Courville will lead the sustainability, impact, strategic planning, corporate affairs and marketing teams.

Ian McBurney has started at City of Greater Bendigo as a coordinator of Greater Bendigo climate collaboration. He previously worked at bHive Cooperative. 

The Bendigo council is also advertising for a climate change engagement officer.

Seeking:

EKO Engineering is seeking a water sustainability professional to join its Power and Water’s Living Water Smart team in Darwin focused on delivering water sustainability, efficiency, and security solutions.

Environmental service Pathzero is looking for a senior sustainability consultant to build their knowledge and share their leadership in Sydney, enabling businesses to navigate towards decarbonisation.

Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd is seeking a sustainability manager to drive its sustainability strategy, plans and initiatives.

Transport Asset Holding Entity of NSW (TAHE) is seeking a new head of safety environment and sustainability.

Envizi chief executive and co-founder David Solsky has flagged he’s looking for 40 new hires after his company was bought by IBM last month. “We will be kicking off a major hiring campaign in early February with 40+ new hires planned over the next three to four months,” he told his LinkedIn followers.

General manager marketing Tamara Robinson told The Fifth Estate that the roles are across “across the entire business”. The jobs will be advertised soon so keep your eyes on this space.

The new roles show an expansion of the company bolstered by the acquisition by IBM, and demonstrate “a great tech success story”, said Ms Robinson.

For IBM the purchase was part of strengthening IBM Consulting’s sustainability offering.
