Lucy Turnbull

Lucy Turnbull AO has stepped down from her role as chief commissioner of the Greater Sydney Commission.

Ms Turnbull, who was the first female Lord Mayor of the City of Sydney from 2003-4 and in 2011, has left the strategic planning organisation to spend more time with her family and commence “other opportunities” that the NSW government is yet to announce.

Deputy chief commissioner Geoff Roberts AM has stepped up to the plate, facilitating a “smooth transition” for the commission’s leadership according to Greater Sydney Commission chief executive officer Dr Sarah Hill.

“Lucy has been an inspiring leader for our organisation over the past four and half years: The commission could not have had a more committed and passionate advocate for Greater Sydney as our inaugural chief commissioner.”

Her input in strategic planning for the whole of metropolitan Sydney, including her leadership in creating the Metropolis of Three Cities, has been applauded by key figures in the industry since the announcement.

“Lucy has been a strong leader in creating and implementing a new approach for how we plan and develop our growing city and identifying the central city as the focus for future growth,” Property Council NSW executive director Jane Fitzgerald said.

“The Greater Sydney Commission’s Region and District Plans provide a roadmap for future growth for our city and are now informing how councils design their own local plans.”

Committee for Sydney chief executive officer Gabriel Metcalf said that she has “worked tirelessly to champion our city and its people, and for that we should be very grateful.”

“She has always been a pioneering figure, both as Lord Mayor and Chief Commissioner. She drove the GSC’s vision of A Metropolis of Three Cities, a plan that will be her lasting legacy.

“Geoff Roberts will make an outstanding new Chief Commissioner and will build upon his important work shaping Western Sydney. As our city rebuilds after the current crisis, long-term planning will become even more important. The Greater Sydney Commission under its new leadership is perfectly poised to lead that vision.”
