The Australian Passive House Association (APHA) is an independent, not-for-profit membership organisation which aims to promote Passive House Certification in Australia. Passive House is a way of providing superior indoor comfort and air quality while also dramatically reducing energy use and carbon emissions in buildings.

The role

Reporting to the Board, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will provide executive level commercial and operational leadership for the APHA to deliver on its strategic plan and ensure ongoing viability and value for members. The CEO will work with the Board to define the strategies and objectives of the business, ensuring these reflect the company’s vision and values. They will also develop strong relationships with key stakeholders such as members, suppliers, and industry associations.

APHA is seeking a CEO with proven leadership abilities at executive level and a high level of communication and strong advocacy skills. Qualifications in either management or business or related disciplines is desirable and proven experience in the property/construction sector is also highly regarded. This role is suited to someone with experience working in a senior position requiring commercial and political acumen. The CEO will have had experience in leading a successful team where their excellent communication skills, empathy and reasoning have inspired and driven success.

To be successful in this role, you will have:
Experience at senior executive level, with experience in a membership-based organisation or industry body an advantage

  • An understanding of governance – experience in working with a board, with a demonstrated ability to execute on strategy
  • The ability to communicate clearly and authentically – to deliver the organisation’s message and engage with a range of stakeholders both within and outside the organisation
  • A strong track record in stakeholder management including engaging with, and influencing policy decisions at Commonwealth, state/territory and local levels 
  • The ability to inspire and lead a small and energetic team
  • Experience in financial oversight and management to ensure short term financial health and long-term sustainability
  • Experience in – or understanding of –philanthropy/funding models within the for-purpose space, as well as the nuances of working with a volunteer board, committees and member groups
  • Alignment to APHA’s vision, purpose, values, and code of conduct
  • Professional qualifications/tertiary degree in a relevant field

Position Description: Chief Executive Officer

Time commitment:  Flexible schedule, 37.5hours per week (preferable)

Location: fully remote Australia-based (preferably eastern-seaboard)

Role & Responsibilities

The following are the primary duties and core objectives of the CEO role:

  1. Ensure ongoing financial viability of the Australian Passive House Association, including managing the budget and forward forecasts, and attempting to achieve the budgeted profit figures, including securing ongoing funding for a strategic operating reserve that ensures the continuity of the core functions of the organisation, namely: the Administrative & Membership Executive role; book-keeping, marketing and website support; organising at least one major conference per year as well as holding lesser events (minimum quarterly) and the associated marketing support to effectively promote those events. 
  2. Strengthen, build on and diversify sources of revenue, which are currently: membership fees; event ticket sales; sponsorships; software sales, education and training. Develop new service offerings and revenue streams for APHA, for example: a registry of compliant Passive House Certified products with links to suppliers; philanthropic contributions from individuals or companies. 
  3. Actively promote Passive House Certification in the Australian Real Estate industry, to potential owners, builders and among relevant professions and trades. Play a key role in building capacity in the market and advocating for the increased uptake of Passive House Certification. Promote case studies of completed projects, technical solutions and benefits ofPassive House Certification.
  4. Stay informed about the number and type of certified Passive House projects delivered and in the pipeline, plus provide APHA’s support to promote Passive House Certification for key projects in planning and development stages. 
  5. Grow the membership base and strengthen the value proposition of being a member of APHA, and act in the best interests of APHA members at all times.
  6. Strong communication skills. Maintain appropriate records of activities and milestones. Share successes via APHA communications channels, including emails to members, website content, newsletter content, social media posts.
  7. Inform the board on work in progress, make recommendations and provide direction for future work, and seek board guidance or sign off for key decisions and strategic direction. Produce written summary reports in support of monthly Board meetings and AGMs. 
  8. Represent APHA’s members interests in industry bodies such as ASBEC and leverage extensive industry connections to advocate and influence decision makers to deliver Passive House Certified buildings. 
  9. Manage all personnel and operational control delegated by APHAs directors and play an active role in attending and directing the activity of the working groups and volunteers: Technical, partnerships, research and national chapters.
