Our Mad Men event last year was a huge success, oversubscribed to say the least.

Now the idea behind Mad Men – to come up with a fabulous way to declare and display your NABERS rating – is being opened to anyone in Australia, and comes with a cash prize.

The NABERS team has dug deep and is now offering a winner’s prize of up to $10,000 in matched funding to turn the winning idea into reality.

A spokesman for the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, which manages the rating system, said: “NABERS will offer up to $10,000 in matched funding for the winner of the NABERS Creative Stars Competition to implement their concept. Funds can be used for materials and will be payable upon proof of receipts.”

Entry is only through the official written entry form available here to ensure that the judging process is fair.

The closing date is 10 May, just ahead of a celebration for the project and winners announcement scheduled at this stage for Wednesday 17 May in Sydney.

NABERS Creative Stars Challenge Judging Criteria

Must haves:

All entries must display the following criteria for fairness and judging purposes:

  • It is clearly identifiable as NABERS
  • It must show the full star rating in context (i.e it cannot be 4 stars out of 4)
  • It must show the expiry date
  • It must contain some reference the specific premises, the rating type and the rating scope
  • Any use of the logo must adhere to the “NABERS Ratings symbol brand guidelines”.

Degree of innovation (5 points)

Is the display a new concept or does it complement existing ideas with a new desirable quality?

Aesthetic quality (5 points)

Is the display aesthetically pleasing?

Education (5 points)

How well does the display tell the story of the building’s sustainability achievements?

Sustainability (5 points)

Does the display use sustainable materials? Can it be updated on an annual basis with the rating?

Engagement (5 points)

Does the display engage visitors to the building? Does it offer a possibility of a playful use or emotional attachment?
