Brief: The Australian Defence Force is worried about climate refugees and climate change related conflict according to briefing notes from last year obtained by the ABC under Freedom of Information.
The military predicts it also may have to increase patrols in the northern seas to deal with sea-level rise migration in the Indo-Pacific.
Former Defence Force chief Chris Barrie, now a member of the Global Military Advisory Council on Climate Change, said he once suggested to government the number of people impacted by climate change seeking refuge in Australia could be as many as 100 million.
“One-hundred million people when we’re only 40 million people — you can get the enormity of this problem. Frankly, it would be beyond our resources.”
The ADF stated that it did not have an “overarching strategy or policy” to deal with risks of this nature.
