Sustainable infrastructure supplier ACCIONA has become the first carbon neutral company in the utilities sector of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices.
The announcement was made at Worldbank’s Innovate4Climate meeting in Barcelona by ACCIONA executive chairman José Manuel Entrecanales.
Through their Sustainability Master Plan 2010-2015, the organisation has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 43 per cent, resulting in emissions falling to 817,200 tons in 2016.
ACCIONA then offset the emissions by acquiring Certified Emission Reductions from wind projects in Mexico under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
In addressing global leaders from the public and private sectors, Mr Entrecanales said the price on CO2 emissions should be “substantially higher” than it currently is to keep global warming below 2ºC.
