21 August 2012 — USA environment group, the Sierra Club, has written to Federal Energy Minister Martin Ferguson about United States’ action to retire 120 coal-fired power stations – and asking him to deliver the Australian government’s promised “contracts for closure” program. Environment Victoria’s Mark Wakeham said it was time for the government to “deliver on its commitment” to replace many of Australia’s power stations. Meanwhile Australian Conservation Foundation’s Tony Mohr said contracts for the closure of the power stations was an essential element of the Clean Energy Future package that must be delivered if Australia was going to move from 1960s-style energy model to a renewable future.
