21 August 2012 — Professor of Housing Christine Whitehead, from the University of Cambridge and the London School of Economics, will present as part of the University of New South Wales’ Built Environment Research seminars on 29 August, from noon to 1pm. Professor Whitehead will discuss findings from two recent research projects by the London School of Economics and the University of Cambridge. The first looked at lessons from other countries, notably in Europe but also Australia and the USA, on how to make the UK’s private rental sector more sustainable. The starting point was the political belief that institutional investment is fundamental in countries where private renting works well and is a pre-requisite for a well operating UK sector. The second was a Europe-wide study relating the nature of private rental regulation to the scale of private rental housing. The study looked at the tension between the views that maximum deregulation was the key to success, as opposed to regulation being essential for a well operating sector. RSVP: m.schwensen@unsw.edu.au
