19 September 2012 — Women from Fiji, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Samoa, Kiribati and Nauru are returning home, ready to transform their communities, after a training course in solar engineering at India’s Barefoot College. The 29 older women, dubbed “Solar Grandmothers”, will be sent solar kits by UN Women, which they will use to electrify their villages. The villages, of 30 to 50 houses, will all have workshops to keep the solar panels and where the “Solar Grandmothers” will work.
