24 May 2011 – The NSW government has buckled under the weight of a huge public backlash to its retrospective cuts to the solar feed in tariffs.

The ABC website on Tuesday night  reported that Premier Barry O’Farrell said his government would compensate people under financial pressure for the cuts but would stick to its determination to slash the tariff from 60 cents a kilowatt hour to 40 cents.

John Grimes from the Australian Solar Energy Society told the ABC that the assistance package would  make a bad situation worse.

“We’re genuinely shocked by this proposal to open an uncapped liability for paying compensation for people hurt by their poor solar retrospective legislation,” Mr Grimes said.

“What this does is open the Government up to a potential compensation bill by 120,000 people.”
