Lismore City Council has closed the loop on municipal green waste and kerbside putrescibles, gaining full organic certification from Australian Organic for the compost products from council’s Materials Recovery Facility. It is the first council in Australia to achieve the certification.

To gain it, council installed new screening processes to remove plastics and other inorganic materials from kerbside waste, as well as stringent product testing and cleaning and hygiene controls.

The Northern Rivers area has a large number of organic and biodynamic food growers, who will now be able to purchase locally made compost products that are fit-for-purpose.

The council said it would put those funds back into implementing further sustainability and recycling initiatives.
