12 February 2013 – Ethical Traveler, a not-for-profit organisation set up to promote responsible travel, has released its annual survey of ethical destinations in the developing world. The top 10 countries are, in no particular order, Barbados in the Caribbean; Cape Verde and Ghana in Africa; Costa Rica and Uruguay in Central/South America; Latvia and Lithuania in Eastern Europe, Mauritius in the Indian Ocean; and Palau and Samoa in the South Pacific.

The survey ranks countries based on human rights, environmental protection and social welfare practice. According to Ethical Traveler, Latvia and Lithuania, along with Costa Rica and Uruguay, scored highest in environmental protection.
