24 February 2011 – The Sydney City Council has embarked on a deck chairs and tables strategy to foster public life and “pop-up outdoor relaxation areas” taking a leaf out of a recent New York’s experiment.
For the next month, the City will put 100 chairs, 25 tables and deck chairs in Barrack Street, Wynyard, and Sydney Square, next to the Town Hall.
“These candy-striped deck chairs are a classic relaxation icon. I encourage people to take a moment from their busy day to enjoy some sunshine and relax in a deck chair – right in the heart of the city,” , said Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.
“We chose Sydney Square and Barrack St, Wynyard because they are not well used spaces but they get a lot of foot traffic. We want to breathe new life into them, encourage people to linger, talk with each other or have some quiet time out.”
The chairs will be set up from Sundays at 7am to Thursdays at 10pm for 24 hours a day, and 7am to 10pm on a Friday and Saturday in Sydney Square. Barrack Street will be open from 11am to 3pm weekdays.
“This is an interesting experiment to see just how many people want to sit, relax and talk with new people, given a comfortable chair,” Ms Moore said.
Sydney Square will also have free Wi-Fi
