23 January 2013 — The China–Australia Centre for Sustainable Urban Development at the University of South Australia will be opened on 12 February by South Australian premier Jay Weatherill.

The centre is a collaboration between the University of South Australia and China’s Tianjin University and is part of a strategy to develop close research and educational links with top universities and municipalities in China.

The opening will be followed by a Chinese welcome by Tianjin Education Committee secretary general Zhu Liping.

The day will also include a debate on the merits of long term city planning and the application of research in the urban environment along with six case studies or research projects.

Keynote speakers are Renewal Australia chief executive officer Fred Hansen who will speak on “Strategies of Adelaide’s urban future” and Buro-OS Beijing’s Ole Scheeren who will focus on “Challenges and opportunities: Building the new China”.
